Welcome to Godwin's Collection of Ladies' 18th Century Clothing

This collection of Ladies' wear represents many attractive styles worn during the 18th Century in England, France, and Colonial America. Fitting is adapted for the modern figure, and outfits are made to be worn with modern underpinnings.

Outfits are available in the fabrics as stated in individual descriptions. When ordering, please give 1st, 2nd and 3rd color choices, or send color samples - they will be matched as closely as possible.

Whether you are looking for something with a difference for daytime wear, or pieces to "mix-and-match" to add variety to an existing wardrobe, you're sure to find something to please your personal fashion style in our selection below!

Caraco Jacket:
Original, English c.1775-80
The caraco was a popular form of "undress" or informal clothing in England and America. Reflecting the styles of the day, it was unfussy, with clean lines, yet semi-fited and feminine. It would be worn over a long Petticoat, and often have a fichu to fill in the neckline. This style is knee-length, with a center-front lacing. The jacket skirt has pleats on both sides and back. Sleeves are 3/4 length, and have a white lingerie ruffle. Neckline and cuffs are trimmed with pleated ruching.  Available in assorted cotton fabrics.  Please state solid color

Practical and comfortable, this short jacket is perfect for camp life or informal day events. Fully lined, front-laced.

Fringed Jacket:
Original,English c.1750-80
The original is silk, but for practical wear, this attractive hip-length jacket is perfect in linen or wool. Probably used by its original owner as a riding habit, the Fringed Jacket also is a stylish and sporty alternative for "mix and match" lady's daywear.

Ladies' Full Petticoat:
To enlarge her wardrobe, a Lady would wear a plain Petticoat to add variety to her outfits. Godwin's Lady's Full Petticoat is done in various fabrics for formal or informal wear, and can be cut for Panniers or without Panniers-Remember to state your preference (with or without Panniers) when ordering!

Ladies' Camp Clothing:
Basic Cap
: This is done in classic white, with the front band approx. 3" wide and 18" from ear to ear. The full crown has top gathers and an adjustable neck edge.

Plain Fichu
: For everyday use, this was a humble but practical item. This is a 36" square of doubled cotton material which can be folded to form a triangular neck-kerchief. Use this to fill in a low neckline for modesty or to keep off a chill outdoors.

Chemise
: This was a woman's basic under garment. Made of white cotton, this version reaches to mid-calf and has a gathered drawstring neckline. Sleeves are 3/4 length and feature a drawstring gathered casing set in from the edge, making an attractive frilled edging at the elbow.

Bib-front Apron
: This was both attractive and useful. This serviceable accessory is made of heavy natural color linen and styled after a 1782 engraving. The Bib Front is plain, designed to be pinned onto the bodice worn beneath.

Linen Camp Clothing:
Shortgown
: (as it was known in Pennsylvania) Was a hip-length, semi-fitted jacket widely used for everyday domestic wear by women of the middle and "working" classes all along the East coast during the 18th and early 19th centuries. The unlined version is done in medium-weight linen with a square neckline and has three pleats in the back to "semi-fit" the figure easily. The sleeves can be worn long on chilly days or rolled up for working or in warmer weather. The front is plain, ready for the traditional overlapped and pinned closing by the wearer.

Petticoat
: Follows traditional styles and construction techniques of the 18th and early 19th centuries. Made of medium-weight linen, the petticoat has a waistline casing with tape ties and side slits for access to the lady's pockets (sold separately). three 1/2" wide tucks near the hemline make a simple, attractive trimming; hem measures approx. 90" around.

Note: Shortgowns and petticoats are made in medium/heavy quality linen. In-stock colors are: French Blue(a soft light blue), Celadon green (dark sage green), Chocolate brown, Camel Tan, Salmon (med. coral shade), and Natural (varigated tan color). Call for availability on other colors.
