The shortgown, as it was known in Pennsylvania, was a hip-length semi-fitted jacket widely used for everyday domestic wear by women of the middle and "working" classes during the 18th and early 19th centuries. The unlined version is done in medium-weight linen with a square neckline and has three pleats in the back to "semi-fit" the figure easily. The sleeves can be worn long on chilly days or rolled up for working or in warmer weather. The front is plain, ready for the traditional overlapped and pinned closing by the wearer.
