onto the bodice worn beneath.

Mrs. Washington's Fichu: The fichu/neckerchief was a favorite fashion accessory, and
Mrs. Washington is seen wearing this item in many portraits. Our "Martha"
version is an oversized kerchief, done in a lightweight, plain white fabric, which can be
worn over the shoulders or inside the neckline of the gown.

Pockets: These were a most necessary item for a woman to keep her personal
necessities close at hand. They were worn beneath the petticoat and accessible through the
side slits. Godwin's offers a Set of Pockets, done in assorted colors in linen on a waist
tie. Pockets are removable from the waist tie for washing, or perhaps for embellishing
with a bit of your own embroidery.
Price: $28.00 |

Pocket Panniers:
Also called side hoops, were worn beneath the lady's gown and petticoat to give a wide,
billowing effect to 18th century formal and semi-formal clothing. Like the original kind,
these are fixed to a waistband made to the wearer's size and are simply tied on
around the waist. We recommend that the knot or bow be offset either to the right or left
so that no unsightly "bulge" will show in the center front when the dress is put
on.
(Note: The pannier hooping is not washable. To remove it for washing,
carefully take out the stitching at the ends of the hoop casing and pull out the hooping.)
Price: $58.75 |
