Men's Clothing: Our uniform for the
common soldier of the English Civil War period consists of a loose fitting jacket and
ample breeches of medium weight wool, lined with unbleached "natural" muslin.
The jacket skims the body lines, fastens in front with pewter or spherical wooden buttons,
and has side and back vents. Extra long sleeves fold back to form lined cuffs, and narrow
squared epaulettes (known in the period as
"wings") are set into the shoulders. The neckline is finished with a narrow
collar. The civilian style has larger wings, fuller front-slitted sleeves with narrow
cuffs, a natural loose fitting waistline and four shaped, overlapped skirts attached to
the waist. The breeches are the same for either jacket, and are moderately full and
semi-fitted, with waist fullness gathered onto a waistband having an adjustable back tie.
Breeches button up the center from and at the knees. Two plain kneegarters are included.
Please advise color wanted and type of buttons. Breeches have pockets. The shirt is
preshrunk "natural look" cotton. For civilian wear, a large loose collar and
sleeve cuffs are optional. 17th century shoes have the correct cut-out sides. They are
available with latchets that tie, or larger latchets to accommodate show buckets. Please
advise if smooth or rough side of the leather is wanted. Click
